Join the City of Escondido, American Legion J.B. Clark Post
145, the California Center for the Arts, Escondido, and the
Escondido History Center for an Independence Day celebration
every July 4th in Grape Day Park. Old-fashioned contests, museum
tours, and live entertainment lead up to the evening fireworks
display.
Our monthly lecture series debuted in July 2005. We feature a speaker on a topic pertinent to local history each month. These free lectures take place in the freight room of the Santa Fe Depot at 2pm on the third Wednesday of each month (dark in December). Authors and local experts discuss a wide variety of topics, and encourage questions at the end of their talk. The lecture and Q&A portion combined usually last 45-60 minutes. Come early or stay late to enjoy the rest of the museum. And check the events calendar for the most up-to-date list of specific topics.
The 2008 annual rummage sale is on January 26th from 9am
until 1pm. Member donated goods are sold with proceeds benefiting the History Center. From the unusual to the mundane, you never know what you’ll find, except of course, bargains galore.
Join
the Endowment Foundation for their second annual fundraiser on
Saturday April 19, 2008. Three outstanding gardens will be open
from 10am – 2pm to inspire and delight you. An arborist’s
large garden with year-round stream will reward you with a new
vista around each bend in the many trails. The garden was the
San Diego Home & Garden Magazine’s Garden of the Year just
a few years ago. Another garden features 400 roses, along with
many other plants. The sights and scents will delight every
flower lover. Refreshments will be served at the third garden, a
beautiful backyard retreat. Plants with a variety of roses,
cymbidium orchids and other flowering plants meant to attract
hummingbirds and other birds. Plants will also be for sale at
the event. Call the information hotline at 760 743-4382 during
March or April for the addresses and purchase tickets for $15
each at any garden, or purchase tickets ahead of time at the
History Center for the reduced rate of $12.50 per ticket.
Step
back in time to experience a Victorian Christmas each December.
The Victorian Country Home is transformed and holiday decorations
abound in every room. From the parlor Christmas tree, to the
table settings in the dining room, to gift wrapping upstairs,
the house takes on a magical glow during the holidays that you
won't want to miss.

history program on Friday evening, December 5, 2008. An event
that is sure to get you in the holiday spirit, you’ll be lead
throughout our site, meeting costumed actors along the way.
You’ll be entertained while also learning a bit about
Victorian Christmas and life in Escondido long ago. A new tour
will commence approximately every 15 minutes between 6 and 8pm.
Tickets are $15 for the general public, $10 for members, with
children under 10 free. Refreshments are included. Please park
in the Woodward parking lot.
